I am Edward Bender. The hardest thing I've ever done is to ask for help. I need a kidney to save my life. My creatinine numbers began to climb and a biopsy on my kidneys found scar tissue.
I am not on dialysis yet, but with my numbers climbing and my kidney functioning plummeting, it is only a matter of time. Its with extreme gratitude I ask that you share my story in hopes of finding a kidney donor.
Kidney donation is a selfless act that can save lives and improve the health of those in need. A kidney transplant is a surgical procedure that replaces a damaged or non-functional kidney with a healthy one.
Living kidney donation is becoming more common, as it has been found to be safe and effective. The donor can live a healthy life with one functioning kidney, while the recipient can enjoy a better quality of life with a fully functioning kidney.
The wait for a deceased donor could be 8 years and that is not ideal for someone who is already on dialysis. Dialysis is physically and emotionally debilitating and takes a lot of time.

In 1969, I spent my active-duty time in the Sixth Fleet on the USS Massy, a World War II destroyer, as a Third-Class Petty Officer serving as the Educational Services Yeoman administering High School equivalency diplomas/training and putting out the ship’s newspaper. In 1976, I received my MBA from Long Island University and worked as a Bank Examiner at the FDIC for 38 years before retirement in 2005.

My wife Marilyn and I have been married for 51 years and have a son, a daughter, and five wonderful grandchildren. I have been involved with Meals on Wheels in our local community, and I have dedicated my life to helping others less fortunate than myself by visiting local nursing homes and providing a listening ear. When living in NY, I served on the committee to visit homebound seniors for many years and had two trips planned with Volunteers for Israel to work on a military base/hospital, unfortunately canceled twice, once for COVID-19 and the recent conflict there.
I have been a very active person – an avid tennis player, I enjoy hiking, kayaking, playing pickle ball and golfing, I’m even involved in community theater.
I want to stay active and continue my volunteer work, spend time with my beautiful family, and watch our grandchildren grow into adults. Will you help me continue my love of serving my family and serving others?
A healthy person can live an everyday life with one kidney. Please help save my life! Click on the link below if you would like to learn more. Thank you.
